Surrey, BC – The Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society have come forward with a $4,000 donation to help pay for damages to the playground and property at The Centre for Child Development.

Over the past few months, vandals have struck several times at The Centre for Child Development, damaging playground equipment, fencing, doors, electrical wiring and vehicles.

“It is disheartening to see the damage done to the playground and property,” said Gerard Bremault, CEO of The Centre for Child Development and Sophie’s Place Child and Youth Advocacy Centre. “I sincerely thank the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society for committing $4,000 towards the repair and replacement of the damaged items. This donation couldn’t have come at a better time. Due to COVID-19, we’ve experienced additional operating costs and reduced donations, being unable to hold in-person fundraising events. We are deeply grateful for the support from the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society.”

“The Centre for Child Development is a not-for-profit society and it was important for us to support them in their time of need,” says Dylan Van Rooyen, Vice-President of the Surrey Fire Fighters Charitable Society. “It was particularly troubling that equipment used by vulnerable children was damaged. The unique inclusive and accessible playground was completed just last year and is used as an assessment lab for children with special needs.”

Since 1953, The Centre for Child Development has been providing comprehensive medical rehabilitative programs and services to children with special needs, serving over 3,000 kids last year. In 2012 The Centre for Child Development expanded its services to include Sophie’s Place. Sophie’s Place is a child and youth advocacy centre where children who have been abused physically and/or sexually can receive supportive services in a child-friendly environment from a specialized multi-disciplinary team.
