Volunteer With Us

The generous spirit

The generous spirit of volunteers is how The Centre began in 1953.

Parents organized rides to the only treatment centre in Vancouver for their children with special needs. In fact, The Centre is truly a testament to what can be accomplished when a community cares.

Why We Need Your Help

While The Centre has grown to support thousands of children with special needs and their families in the South Fraser area every year, there are over 30,000 South Fraser children and youth who need our help, with more families coming to the area every year.

  • Are you a young adult looking to gain new skills?

Since 2011, we have had the opportunity to witness the growth & development of both The Centre and Sophie’s Place. Volunteering has been and continues to be a positive and rewarding experience. It has taught us all a valuable lesson in that donating a few hours a month can make a positive impact on those in need.

My wife and I volunteered for the Run, Walk & Roll for our Kids committee for several years. It gave us the opportunity to help children with special needs and the satisfaction of knowing that our participation helped raise funds to provide the necessary treatments, equipment and programs to help improve their quality of life.

Volunteering is not only about helping but an excellent way to explore career choices. While volunteering at this program for The Centre for Child Development, I’ve been opened up to many career choices that were once non-existent in my field of view. I’ve gotten a feel for the jobs at hand, their daily routines and duties. I’ve learned that these jobs aren’t as easy as I once thought they were. The day can take so many different turns, depending on the mood of the child, unexpected injuries, and adapting to their changing bodies but then there’s this amazing sense of accomplishment at the end of the day. This volunteer experience has better equipped me with the tools necessary to make an informed decision about my career choices.

By volunteering for the Adaptive Youth Fitness Program, I have gained many skills that will benefit me in the future. Working with the children every week has taught me a lot about patience and responsibility, which are very important attributes that will help me be successful in my career choice. Being around the children has also opened my eyes to the possibility of me working in the paediatric field in the next couple of years. I’m very appreciative of the opportunity I have received which has led me to meet such great people and I look forward for the oncoming years with this program.
