for Neurodevelopmental Conditions

Key Workers

Key Workers provide family-centered support services for children and youth with a variety of complex neurodevelopmental conditions

This includes conditions such as Complex Developmental Behavioural Conditions (CDBC), Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD), or conditions with similar challenges. Children and youth eligible for the Key Worker program have delays in multiple areas of brain functioning such as self-control, daily living skills, attention, decision-making and planning, which lead to a significant developmental delay.

Children/youth do not need to have a formal diagnosis to be referred to the Key Worker program.

Family-Centered Support

We provide family-centered support services. The nature of our work depends on the needs of the family and may include working alongside the child/youth, family members, school and community agencies.

Our family-centered work is usually short term, about 6 months. Examples of services we provide include:

  • Providing information
  • Assisting with behavior strategies or life skills
  • Linking to family services
  • Helping families meet their own and their child’s need

We provide educational groups to parents and caregivers of children and youth with neurodevelopmental disorders, which cover topics such as lifespan development, advocacy, accessing community resources, and self-care.

We also run a support group which provides a chance to meet other parents and caregivers who are raising children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

We provide training and consultation to government and community agencies, and work alongside these agnecies to enhance the integration, coordination, and accessibility of services for families with a child/youth with neurodevelopmental disorders.

Who’s eligible?

  • Children 0-12 living in Surrey (North of 48th Avenue)
  • Children 0-19 living in Langley

Diagnosis

If you have concerns about your child’s development, speak with your family doctor or primary care provider. If appropriate, they can refer you to a pediatrician. The pediatrician will meet with you to discuss your concerns, and may recommend a referral to Sunny Hill Health Centre for an assessment.

Our Approach

The F-words emphasize your child's strengths, interests and your family's values. They remind us to focus on what children CAN do.

They highlight the importance of all the elements of a child's health and well-being, including social relationships and meaningful participation at home, in school, childcare and in the community.
